Twelfth Madrid UPM Advanced Statistics and Data Mining Summer School in June-July 2015

  • The 12th edition of the summer school, organized by the Artificial Intelligence Department of UPM's School of Computer Science, will be held from June 26th to July 7th this year.

    The summer school comprises intensive courses which aim to provide attendees with an introduction to both the theoretical foundations and the practical applications of some of the modern statistical analysis techniques currently in use. The summer school comprises 12 courses, each of them week-long and composed of 15 lecture hours, given during two weeks (six courses per week). Each course has theoretical as well as practical classes, in which each technique is put into practice with a computer program.

  • The summer school, organized by the Artificial Intelligence Department, has been selected by INOMICS as one of the top ten summer schools in mathematics and statistics, along with summer schools organized by institutions such as the Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford Universities. It is the only one among the selected schools to focus on data science.

CIG's Concha Bielza awarded the 2014 Technical University of Madrid Research Prize

  • The award acknowledges Prof. Bielza's contributions to machine learning --especially probabilistic graphical models-- and her applications of data science to medicine, neuroscience, bioinformatics, scientiometrics, agriculture and industrial machining, over the more than two decades that she has been with the University.

CIG's Pedro Larrañaga awarded the 2013 Aritmel National prize in Computer Science

  • CIG's Pedro Larrañaga was awarded the 2013 Aritmel award from the Spanish Scientific Computing Society (SCIE). Aritmel prize recipients are researchers under 55 years who have made significant contributions to scientific computer science. The prize recognizes Prof. Larrañaga's methodological contributions, especially to Bayesian networks and evolutionary computation, as well as the succesfull applications in the fields of Bioinformatics and Neuroscience. The jury emphasized the breadth and depth of Prof. Larrañaga's research as well as his capacity for organizing research groups, having founded the Intelligent Systems Group (ISG) at the University of the Basque Country and the Computational Intelligence Group (CIG) at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM).

  • An article by Luis Guerra et al., titled 'Semi-supervised projected Clustering for Classifying GABAergic Interneurons', won the Marco Ramoni Best Paper Award at the 14th Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, held in Murcia, Spain. Alongside Luis Guerra, the paper was co-authored by CIG's Concha Bielza and Pedro Larrañaga, members of the Cajal Institute for neuroscience research, Ruth-Benavides Piccione and Javier DeFelipe, and Victor Robles of the School of Computer Science at the Technical University of Madrid.

  • Pedro Larrañaga, head of Computational Intelligence Group at the Technical University of Madrid, delivered a talk entitled 'Computational Intelligence and Sustainability' at a workshop dedicated to the role of Computational Intelligence in Knowledge Society, held on May 7th 2013. The workshop was jointly organized by the Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering (RAI) and the ATICA network.   • An article co-authored by Pedro L. López-Cruz, Concha Bielza, and Pedro Larrañaga has been accepted for publication in the top journal 'Nature Reviews Neuroscience'. It has been developed in collaboration with Javier de Felipe of CSIC's Instituto Cajal, and numerous other leading researchers from prestigious neuroscience institutions.
